Payment system and national interbank network

The Payments System, managed by the Central Bank, enables the channeling of payment instruments such as domestic transfers, direct debits from the Enlarged Public Administration, as well as domestic checks, collections and payments from the State Treasury and collections from the State Collector's Office, as part of the daily address exchange service.

Interbank communication is ensured by the use of the San Marino Interbank Network (RIS), to which all banks adhere. The RIS is a telematic network, guaranteed by special security systems, conforming to suitable certification techniques, having the function of allowing the exchange of electronic data between its users, carried out in compliance with adequate standards of security, confidentiality, integrity, authenticity, timeliness, reliability and efficiency.

Settlement of payment instruments takes place on specific interbank accounts in accordance with the provisions of current regulations. San Marino banks maintain specific centralized accounts with the Central Bank for the settlement of interbank transactions.

The San Marino banking system adopts the IBAN (International Bank Account Number) standard and all San Marino banks have the BIC (Bank Identifier Code) assigned by Swift (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication).
