International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

November 25 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, a day dedicated to honoring the victims of abuse, mistreatment, and femicide, as well as to combating gender discrimination and inequality.

This year, numerous initiatives are taking place worldwide to raise awareness about these critical issues. UN Women has launched its slogan, “UNiTE! Activism to End Violence Against Women and Girls!” to emphasize that violence against women is one of the most widespread, persistent, and devastating violations of human rights. Alarmingly, this violence often goes unreported due to factors such as impunity, silence, stigmatization, and the shame associated with it.

Violence excludes women from public spaces, the workforce, and political participation; it impoverishes or destroys families and communities; and it perpetuates poverty, illness, and maternal and infant mortality. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “...violence against women is a global health problem of enormous proportions...”.

The Central Bank joins in the commemorations for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, continuing the path taken through its “Diversity & Inclusion Coordination” initiatives. The Bank wishes to remind the public that the dedicated hotline 0549 994800 for victims of domestic and gender-based violence remains active in the community. Individuals can also reach out for support via email at centroascoltoantiviolenza@iss.sm. In cases requiring immediate intervention, trained personnel from the Medical Emergency Services, Civil Police, and Gendarmerie are prepared to respond to any needs.
