San Marino, October 19, 2026 – The Republic of San Marino is taking a crucial step today in its integration process with the European Union by signing the Association Agreement with the EU, which is scheduled to enter into force in early 2027, thus completing a process that began in 2012 with the signing of the Monetary Convention.
The Agreement establishes a framework for closer relations with the European Union and provides for San Marino’s participation in the single market, in compliance with European rules and under conditions of equal competition and full reciprocity.
For the financial sector, access to the single market will be phased in and contingent upon a positive assessment of the soundness of San Marino’s regulatory and supervisory frameworks, with the involvement of European supervisory authorities.
“The signing of the Association Agreement opens up new prospects for San Marino, going beyond the strengthening of institutional relations with the European Union and looking toward the gradual opening of our financial system to an increasingly international dimension, creating growth opportunities for the country’s economy,”said Catia Tomasetti, President of the Central Bank of the Republic of San Marino.
“The signed Agreement is the result of a process rooted in the restructuring of San Marino’s financial system through far-reaching measures addressing asset quality, capital adequacy, governance, and profitability,” states Andrea Vivoli, Director General of the Central Bank of the Republic of San Marino.“It is an opportunity we must approach with the understanding that integration depends first and foremost on the soundness of the regulatory framework, the effectiveness of supervision, and the credibility of the system,” he concludes.
