May 17, 2025: A day to celebrate equality and foster awareness

Written by BCSM | 15 May 2025

May 17 commemorates the World Health Organization’s decision to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders in 1990.

The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia was established by a resolution of the European Parliament on 26 April 2007 and every year it calls upon both institutions and citizens to engage in reflection on the moral principles of equality, individual freedom, and the inherent dignity of every person.

This day has gained increasing significance over time, becoming not only a valuable occasion to raise public awareness of the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ communities, but also a moment to take stock of the progress made through decades of activism, struggle, and solidarity. It serves as a call to foster greater responsibility in building a civil, inclusive, peaceful, and enlightened society — one in which respect for diversity is not only a moral principle, but a daily reality experienced and embraced by everyone.

Celebrating May 17 reminds us not to forget and not to take anything for granted. The road toward equality and full social inclusion indeed remains long, but it is one we can embark on together, every day, through our daily actions.

The Central Bank is actively committed to recognizing diversity as a strength and to promoting a safer, more respectful, and inclusive workplace culture.
